STEAM

UP TO 20' IN LENGTH
(PLYWOOD & CEDAR STRIP)
|
Study Plans are available
for these designs - remember a study plan gives you more details and a
wood materials list usually on two A1 sheets, so that you can cost out a project
before ordering the full plans. When you order the full construction plans
you do not need to order the study plan as well, as all the study details
are on the full plans.
We have 8 designs - 3 for
plywood construction and 5 for Cedar strip planking. Furthermore, 2 of the
designs have options for longer lengths.
Note -
In the particulars for each design, the dry weight is given for guidance
only and will vary depending on the grade/density of plywood and solid
wood used - different thicknesses of ply are often used by builders and
the dry weight figure is based on the thinnest ply specified.
Also the Guidance Use comments are given in good faith and are based on
feedback from previous builders etc and based on standard weight adults
- contact us if you want further clarification before ordering/building.
Speed and power requirements are also based on feedback and estimates
and are for guidance only - actual speeds attained will depend on
loading etc.

FELIX
13'/15' STRIP PLANKED LAUNCH
|
|
|
|
This is one of those commissions that every designer loves to work on
occasionally - a step back in to pure nostalgia. But having said that, our
researches before designing this vessel showed just how expert early designers
were in getting just the right compromise in design without the aid of
computers.
The drawings detail all the mould shapes for strip planked construction without
the need for lofting and show her fitted out with a Stewart Turner Swan
steam plant. She could also be fitted with an electric propulsion unit. LOA 13;
Beam 5; Draft 14. There is also an additional sheet available
showing the mould shapes for a 15 version of the Felix and also for a transom
hung rudder version.
Stephen Brock & Andrew Williams have built a beautiful example with
electric power which you can see at their web site -

16' FELIX LAUNCH
|
|
Our
Felix 13 was lengthened to 15 and the beam increased to
accommodate batteries for electric power and now this design has been
lengthened a further 12 and the beam increased by 6 and the hull
depth also increased so that she may accommodate an aft saloon.
This
new Felix now has the ability to take 2 in comfort for over-night stays
or to be fitted out without the saloon as a work launch or small fishing
boat. Construction is in strip plank and the machinery arrangement shows
an electric motor but she could of course take steam or diesel power.
|
The
plans now include the modified moulds etc for a schooner bow version of
the Felix 16. The schooner bow adds 680mm (2'3") to the length of
the hull - below.

For
those wanting an elegant traditional looking launch to go with their steam plant
but which is relatively quick to build. Rose has a V bottomed plywood hull
which uses stitch and epoxy methods. Her construction can be light weight using
6mm ply or heavy duty using 2 layers of 5 or 6mm ply. She has a displacement of
890 kg to the DWL, which with a heavy construction of 250 kg allows her to carry
good sized bunkers and at least 6 people. The drawings also show panel shapes
for a smaller lighter version with the same length but a beam of 5. LOD 153:

FANNY
THE FANTAIL LAUNCH
|
|
We were asked to design
"Fanny" for the Boatman magazine and the construction of her
hull was covered in issues 30 to 37. Since then several have been built
both in plywood and in steel (by Peter Nicholls Steel Yachtbuilders).
She was originally based upon our successful ROSE 'V' bottomed launch
which has a large carrying capacity and enough volume for steam,
electric or diesel engine propulsion. The drawings give details for
Fanny to be built as an open launch or with a closed wheelhouse.
The original requirement was for a tough, robust single chine 'V'
bottomed launch that could be stored in the average domestic garage but
still have the capacity to carry up to 6 or 8 crew. She had to have
sweet lines, the ability to be adapted for different roles and ease in
construction.
Construction is based upon a simple framework of ply frames/bulkheads,
ply fore/aft girders and stringers which is then clad in a ply hull
skin. The frames define most of the fit-out so that, on turning her
over, fit-out time is minimal. LOD 15'4" (4.68m); Beam
6'3" (1.91m); Draught 1'8" (0.51m); Approx. wht. 1455 lbs (660
kg).

17'9" INDIAN
RUNNER STRIP PLANKED LAUNCH
|
|
Right,
Tom Peebles' Indian Runner 'Talisker' off Portsoy.
|
|
|
Left, an example by
Peter Stent of PJS Boats
|
Indian Runner is one of several steam launches that we are designing which are
based upon the Amaryllis 22 hull form. This is characterised by having a long
waterline length, wine glass shaped transom stern lifted well clear of the
waterline and with very firm bilge sections giving high stability for her beam.
This launch, designed for Mr. I. Cross will use a Taylor Compound steam unit
with a coal fired boiler and she will swing a 14x20 propeller. The
standard layout has her with an aft seat area separate from the engine area by a
bulkhead/locker which also takes the steering wheel. Immediately forward of the
boiler is the bunker followed by a separate forward seat area. Other layouts can
of course be used.
She is constructed using the strip planked method using our computer faired
mould shapes allowing the builder to get straight into construction. The hull
may be sheathed inside and out with glass cloth in epoxy resin giving a tough
abrasion resistant shell which requires little framing or maintenance and which
can be finished clear. She may also be conventionally finished with ribs if you
want true authenticity.
LOD 179 (5.40m); LWL 164 (4.98m); Beam 51 (1.55m);
Draft 19 (0.53m); Displ. approx 2240 lbs (1000 kg). Details are
available for a 21'6"x5'6" version of the Indian Runner.
Note - we have also drawn up the mould and jig details for a 19' x 6' version
with an additional 3" of freeboard/hull depth - these details are given as
part of the original 17'9" design package.

Construction uses the strip plank process using computer faired mould shapes and
she is powered by a Mini Kota type electric outboard. LOA 18'6" (5.64m);
Beam 39" (0.99m); Weight 250 lbs (115 kg) with batteries.
She can take 3 or 4 adults. She could be fitted with a canopy or with steam
power.

19' SAPPHIRE
SINGLE CHINE LAUNCH
|
|
|
Sapphire
is a simple 'V' bottom single chine plywood design and will suit the steam
enthusiast who wants a good sized launch which does not take too long to build
but which looks very elegant. Construction uses a simple ply framework which is
set up upside down along with Pine stringers before the hull planking is applied
over-size and trimmed. The standard layout has two cockpits, one fore and the
other aft with a central engine space but she could be fitted out with various
different arrangements. LOD 19'1" (5.82m); Beam 4'9" (1.45m); Draft
1'11" (0.59m); Displ. to WL 2800 lbs (1270 kg).

the Lifu launch. Her lines have, however, been further deepened so that she can
also take the weight of batteries for electric propulsion. A 1.4 hp 48 volt
motor may be used and there is room for batteries which would give a 12 hour
cruising range. Alternatively, of course, she may be steam or diesel powered to
suit your own requirements. The standard arrangement shown on the plans has an
aft saloon which is big enough to take 2 full length bunks with stowage space
for a small galley and wc. Forward is an open cockpit area with the steering
position using a side wheel.
The plans show computer faired mould shapes for strip planked construction
allowing the builder to get straight in to making the building mould without the
need for lofting and details are given for the motor and steering installation.
LOD 19 (5.79m); Beam 58 (1.73m); Draft 21 0.64m); Approx.

I was
asked to remodel the Edwardian 19 hull to dimensions of 25'x5'10"
for Nigel Thompson with a plumb stem and the photos below are of his
lovely example. The mould shapes and jig details are available in
addition to the standard plans - see below.
