STEAM &
ELECTRIC LAUNCHES
BETWEEN 20' & 30' IN LENGTH
(PLYWOOD & CEDAR STRIP) |
Study Plans are available
for these designs - remember a study plan gives you more details and a
wood materials list usually on two sheets of A1, so that you can cost out a project
before ordering the full plans. When you order the full construction plans
you do not need to order the study plan as well, as all the study details
are on the full plans.
We have 15 designs - 2
for plywood construction and 12 for Cedar strip planking.
Note
also that two of the designs below 20' in length, can be extended - the
17'9" Indian Runner may be built as a 21' launch and the Edwardian 19 may
also be built with a length of 21'.
Note -
In the particulars for each design, the dry weight is given for guidance
only and will vary depending on the grade/density of plywood and solid
wood used - different thicknesses of ply are often used by builders and
the dry weight figure is based on the thinnest ply specified.
Also the Guidance Use comments are given in good faith and are based on
feedback from previous builders etc and based on standard weight adults
- contact us if you want further clarification before ordering/building.
Speed and power requirements are also based on feedback and estimates
and are for guidance only - actual speeds attained will depend on
loading etc.

21' VERSION
OF THE EDWARDIAN 19
|
|
We have the mould
shapes and building jig details for a 21' x 5'10" version of the Edwardian
19 - drawings consist of the Edwardian 19 drawings plus the extra for the 21'
version. The example shown here is by Ralph Pullen who is happy to supply
fabricated deck fittings (stem head fittings etc) - for details contact Selway
Fisher Design. Ralph's launch swings a 16" x 20" prop and has a saloon
large enough to sleep 2 in comfort and to seat up to 5. She's shown here just
after her initial launch. For ordering details
see the Edwardian 19 ordering/price details on the Steam Launches up to 20' Page. |
20' CAMBRIAN STRIP PLANKED
LAUNCH |
|
This
is a fairly narrow launch (4'7" beam) for light weight fit-out. Her
hull has hard bilges giving maximum stability for her beam making
her a fine river or lake launch. At 19 (0.52m), the draft has been
kept to a minimum to make trailing easy.
Construction is for strip planking with Cedar over computer
generated/faired mould shapes.
LOA 20' (6.10m); Beam 4'7" (1.41m); Draft 1'9" (0.52m);

RUBY
22' DOUBLE
CHINE PLYWOOD LAUNCH
|
|
|
|
|
Model
by Keith E. Bragg
|
Below is a straight stemmed
version in steel of the Ruby 22
|
|
|
|
For those steam enthusiast who want
an elegant 22 steam launch of Edwardian profile but who do not want to spend
the time and additional cost of producing a strip planked hull, we have designed
Ruby. Our client originally thought of having her with a single chine V
bottom which looked quite good on the computer model and would have produced a
good boat. However, by spending a little more time experimenting with a further
chine to see what this looked like, we came up with a hull, still simple to
build but with a little more shape at the bow and mid section which could
not be achieved with a single chine. (The single chine version still exists on
the computer for those who may be interested).
The drawings show the plank shapes for pure stitch and epoxy construction but
also give details for using stringers at the chines for ply on frame
construction which some builders may prefer. The standard layout shows a 6
long aft seating well which could take a light canopy, the central engine/boiler
area with a side wheel steering position and bunker and a forward seating
cockpit. The arrangement can be altered to suit. For those who prefer, we can
give details for round bilged strip planked construction. The draft will
accommodate a 21 prop but an ideal combination would be a Stuart 6A engine
linked to a 16x25 prop. LOA 222 (6.76m); Beam 55
(1.65m); Draft 21 (.64m) Displ. 3360 bs (1500 kg); Approx construction
weight 2426 lbs (1100 kg).
|
Note - the plans
also include details of a more plumb stem.
|
Note also that we now have a 19'
version of the Ruby design with more hull beam and depth on a shorter length -
go to Motor Boats 16' to 20' in length.

The above is an Ijssel 21
under construction by Pieter Brittijn
This launch has been
designed for diesel propulsion (10-15 hp) but she can also take steam or
electric propulsion. The layout drawn for her is a simple open thro
plan with no obstructing bulkheads but she could be fitted out in a
variety of waysa saloon and/or canopy could be fitted.
Construction is Cedar strip plank and the plans give computer faired
mould shapesshe could just as easily be built using the clinker/ply
method too.
The hull has a full bodied wineglass shape and the forward sections are
well flaired. She has the capacity to take up to 10 or more crew.

GOLDEN BAY STEAM LAUNCH |
|
This launch was designed for
easy trailing so a length of 23 with a moderate beam of just under 6
were set. In line with the Simson Strickland style of launch, the stem
and transom are fairly plumb with a deep forefoot giving hollow lines
forward and maximum effective waterline length for speed. The midship
section is fairly full with a wide waterline beam to give good form
stability and above the waterline, the topsides are well flaired forward
to deflect spray and run into tumblehome aft giving her a shapely
transom.
The saloon unusually, runs from
the forward coaming and covers just over half of the cockpit to give
maximum protection in choppy conditions to both crew and steam plant.
Steering is by a side wheel adjacent to the engine . The aft part of the
long cockpit is covered by a canvas canopy and she can sit 6 to 8 people
comfortably. The internal fit-out can be changed if a long cockpit is
not required. Construction is Cedar Strip.
LOA 23 (7.02m); Beam 510 (1.78m);
draft 26 (0.75m); Approx. weight with 1000 lbs (454 kg) of steam
plant, 3363 lbs (1525 kg). |

BAY LAUNCH
|
|
This
26 version of the Golden Bay has the same fairly high and flaired bow
sections designed to throw off spray which flow into aft sections which
have tumblehome giving her a generous waterline beam for maximum
stability.
These
drawings show her with a canvas top and a 34hp diesel engine but she
could take a solid cabin similar to that on the 21 version and she
may be powered by a steam plant (around 15 IHP) or by electric motor.
Construction
is for Cedar strip over computer faired moulds. The interior shows
simple open plan seating for 8 people but she may be fitted out with
other arrangements.

23'6" BRAMBLING ELECTRIC
CANOE

A
leisurely craft from the Edwardian and Victorian eras - days of elegance on the
Thames with parasols and wine! we were commissioned to design such a canoe, to
be powered by a Gebofa electric 1.6 hp sail drive unit and constructed using
modern clinker ply methods. The plans give the computer faired sectional mould
shapes which are then erected onto a strong back. Stringers are then let into
the moulds and the plank shapes taken easily from the building jig using the
stringers as a guide. The hull could also be strip planked. LOA 23'6"

EDWARDIAN 26
|
ABOVE - Left, an
Edwardian 26 just kisses the water and Right - the counter stern moulds before
planking.
Having put the lines of an original 25 LIFU launch into our computer system
we have used this shape in the development of this 26 Edwardian Launch. The
LIFU launches were very successful and were known for their good sea keeping
qualities when being used as tenders for the big racing yachts of the time. We
have taken the original lines and increased the beam to the maximum for canal
use and changed the bow and stern shapes to give a fan tail stern and moderate
schooner bow in similar fashion to some of the Thames launches. The full
construction plans have a forward engine arrangement in a cockpit with an aft
saloon with raised clerestory housing a galley, settees and wc. This
arrangement can be altered to suit and steam, diesel or electric power units may
be used. Enough displacement volume has been built in to take the batteries
necessary for electric power. Details are shown for strip planked construction
and the mould shapes given have been computer faired so that no lofting is
required. Beam is 6'10".
Apart from the original 26'
x 6'10" version with schooner/clipper bow, the plans now also include
moulds and jig details for the following modifications :-
26'x8' beam version schooner and plumb stem.
28'x6'10" beam version.
26'x6'6" beam version with plumb stem.
26'x6'10" beam version with plumb stem.
36'x8' beam version with original schooner/clipper bow (also includes
construction drawing and spec. for Edwardian 30).
Note - Mike Bell's 30'x6'10" version is the 28'x6'10 version above and
was simply stretched to 30' by spacing out the moulds further.
There are now plans available for a 42" (1066mm) long model of
the original Edwardian 26 design (schooner bow and counter stern)
for model steam or electric power - go to www.makeamodelboat.com

26' GOLDEN
VIRGINIA LAUNCH
|
|
Pete
Greenfield, Editor of the Watercraft Magazine asked me to design this
launch and is going to partly finance it by giving up smoking, hence the
name Golden Virginia
! She is strip planked and is fitted out with settee berths and simple
basic wc and cooking facilities. The stern has a fantail similar to the
Edwardian 19 and she could be fitted out without the saloon to make a
splendid open launch.
The
combination of fantail stern and plumb stem is North American in style
and very workman like.

25'6" SNOW BUNTING
|
|
|
Snow
Bunting is a river and estuary launch based upon the LIFU model hull with it's
long waterline length and fairly full and buoyant ends. She has been designed
for a client in Canada who wanted a seaworthy and trailable open launch. Full
construction details are given for strip plank building combined with external
diagonal veneers. This produces a very strong hull and allows the thickness of
the Cedar strip planking to be reduced. The mould shapes are computer faired and
she could be adapted for any method of construction (with or without veneering).
The steam plant on the first boat is an Alex Ritchie 15 IHP unit driving a
24" propeller although she could be powered by smaller units. A German
client has also used the same design but is fitting a very heavy boiler unit and
the drawings therefore give the mould shapes for a wider beam version
(6'8") with slightly increased freeboard (This latter launch is Pluto). LOD
25'6" (7.75m); Beams 6'2" and 6'8" (1.88m and 2.03m); Draft
2'7" (0.78m); Weight with 1000 lbs (454 kg) of steam plant 3300 lbs (1497
kg).
Above Left -

go in and planking starts - and to the right and immediately below is a Snow Bunting modified with a
counter stern by Larry Jacobson and now being finished by Joe Sabo.

27' MARLOW
ELECTRIC/STEAM LAUNCH |
|
We
used the Edwardian 26 as a basis for this launch. We were asked to
change the stern shape to a rather handsome counter and add more beam,
but not too much, just enough to give her a more comfortable interior
without taking away from her sleek lines.
Construction
is for strip plank over computer faired mould shapes. The layout has a
saloon with 2 sette/berths, gally and wc compartment and a large forward
cockpit.
The
drawings show an Aquapella electric motor but she could also be powered
by diesel or steam.
LOD

a diagonal veneer - the hull could also be built using a single Cedar
strip - https://farrowandchambers.co.uk |

ETNA LAUNCH
|
|
For
Etna we have gone for a hull shape which is very much not the steam
launch 'norm'. With her modern reverse counter stern and pronounced
tumblehome home in the aft sections changing into a flaired bow
sections, she has a hull that will turn heads.
The construction is for 15mm (5/8") strip Cedar planking with
a diagonal veneer of 3mm (1/8") Kaya but she could be built with a
single thickness of 18mm (3/4") Cedar sheathed in glass/epoxy. The
bilge stringers and engine/boiler beds are fitted before planking
commences so that there is no awkward fitting later.
The standard fit-out is for a large aft cockpit, central steam
plant space and forward cockpit.
Look out for her sister launch 'Michelle' which is a similar
design but with a more raked bow.
|
Below are
photos of Etna beautifully built by Farrow & Chambers who also built
the Marlow launch. The spade rudder is not standard to the drawings but
suits the shape of the aft end.

MICHELLE LAUNCH
|
|
Michelle
is a sister ship to Etna (above). The main difference is in her bow
shape which is more raked - the aft sections and transom are the same as
Etna. She has an open internal layout similar to Etna's.

20' STERN WHEELER MOULDS
|
|
Below shows
the stern wheeler hull strip planked by the Rappahannock Boat Company.
|
|
|
We have the computer generated and faired
mould shapes and building jig details for a 20 x 7' hull - a version
of an old design which was originally narrower and designed for use with
the steam plant sited aft and close to a stern paddle wheel. We supply the construction details and spec. for the
Edwardian 19 to go with the mould shapes along with the saloon plans so
that the builder can build the hull in similar fashion.

27' GREEN WOODPECKER
|
|
Green
Woodpecker started life as a steam launch with an enclosed saloon and
forward accommodation but during the design/build process it was decided
to change to electric drive. The plans show both steam and electric
installation details and both the original superstructure with enclosed
saloon/forward accommodation and the arrangement shown in the
illustration above - a saloon with galley and wc compartment plus
settee/berths and internal steering and cockpits fore and aft.
The hull can be fitted out in a number of different ways and with
her plumb stem and wineglass transom, would look good as an open launch.
