METHOD
(Watercolour)
A.
Start with a pencil sketch – watch the angles and the
direction of the bricks, especially the vertical ones.
B.
Painting:
i.
I started with the flowers as it would be too easy
for the brickwork to over-power the flowers if the bricks were
painted first.
ii.
Having established where the flower heads are to be,
paint in some wet CY and then whilst wet drop in some CR (the
yellow under the red makes the red brighter). Whilst still wet
use a little UB under the flower head in the shadow area.
iii.
For the greenery, paint wet LY and then drop in mixes of
SG and SG + BU. Use a little purple mix (CR + UB) under the
greenery for the shadow areas.
iv.
Once the flowers are dry, start with the window and work
forward – I mixed some UB with a little BU to make a darker,
less bright blue (or use weak Paynes Grey if you have it). Make
this darker towards the left side of the window and when dry use
a stickier mix of the same for the reflection of the bars.
v.
For the brickwork, use varying shades of BS with a little
BU and UB – vary the texture and make it look 3D by darkening
the tones of the brickwork in shadow.
vi.
To finish I darkened the right hand side of the metal
bars leaving the left side white.
