Study Plans are available
for these designs - remember a study plan gives you more details and a
wood materials list on usually on
two A1 sheets, so that you can cost out a project
before ordering the full plans. When you order the full construction plans
you do not need to order the study plan as well, as all the study details
are on the full plans.
We have 7 designs
all for modern plywood construction -
there are study plans (A1 sheets with sections, construction details and a wood
materials list, for most of these designs - for further information please see
the price list on the main page.
Note -
In the particulars for each design, the dry weight is given for guidance
only and will vary depending on the grade/density of plywood and solid
wood used - different thicknesses of ply are often used by builders and
the dry weight figure is based on the thinnest ply specified.
Also the Guidance Use comments are given in good faith and are based on
feedback from previous builders etc and based on standard weight adults
- contact us if you want further clarification before ordering/building.
Please also note that we give the computer faired mould, inner stem and
transom shapes plus the building jig details for clinker ply
construction where stated and recommend that the builder purchases a
good manual on this method of construction to use with these details. E & OE |

At
last, a bigger Highlander dayboat - so really a pocket cruiser or small
yacht. She has been drawn up for clinker
ply construction over a framework of ply girders and bulkheads but the
hull planks shapes are also given for her to be built using the stitch
and tape method. She is set up with an outboard well and a large cockpit
which could take a boom tentthe cabin is big enough for 2 berths and
a small galley and Porta Potti WC.
Maximum headroom as drawn is 4'5" but she has a size of hull that
could take a modified cabin arrangement.
Her
centreplate makes her ideal for trailing and gunkholing. The
centreplate pivot is on the outside of the hull and the lift is via a
tube into the cockpit so that there are no leak problems.

24x 6 using 22 sheets of 3/8 and 2 sheets of 1/2 ply in its
basic form. A water ballast tank and motor well may be used and the whole craft
made in three 8 boltable sections for ease in construction, transportation

coastal work. Construction is based upon pre-shaped ply side hull panels which
are bent round the frames. The bottom is then put on oversize.

A 22x6 multi-role cruiser from pre-shaped ply panels. May be made with
water ballast tank and with either a single or double masted unstayed sprit boom
rig. Two people may sleep in the cabin and two under a cockpit tent. A pretty
boat using ultra-simple ply construction with stitch and epoxy chines. The aft
end of the boat has a parallel section and therefore the hull may be shortened
or stretched to suit.

20' KARI 3
|
|
|
|
A Dutch client asked us to use the original KARI - 2 as a model for a craft not
too much longer but capable of having a small cabin area which could take 2 or 3
bunks along with a small cooker and wc. We looked at the original section of the
boat and decided that a harder bilge would be required so that she would have
more initial stability and greater internal volume. We also increased the beam
by 14 and carried this much closer to the waterline. This allowed us to
use her form stability and to keep ballast to a minimum for easy trailing. The
ballast is around 175 kg which will be fine for most estuary sailing, but she
has the capability of taking more if required for offshore sailing. The steel
centreplate is accommodated below the cabin sole and has its pivot outside
the hull so that there are no leaks. In this way she is very adaptable and with
her outboard well and easily handled gunter rig, she makes an ideal lightweight
trailer camping cruiser. The plank shapes are given for simple and quick
ply/epoxy construction using 4 planks per side, but if you want to go for
clinker/lapstrake construction, we can, as with all our designs, give the
computer faired mould shapes. She uses 15 sheets of 9mm, 2 sheets of 12mm and 5
sheets of 4/6mm in her construction. LOD 199 (6.00m); Beam 66
(1.95m); Draft 16/37 (0.46/1.1m); Sail Area 176 sq.ft (16.4
sq.m); Approx. wht 1265 lbs (575 kg). Details are included for
clinker/ply construction and an alternative lug rig.
The example below is a strip/veneered version by Aquiles Rosner. |

20' ISLE OF GIGHA
|
|
A client who had already built the 14' Morning Tide Pocket Cruiser asked
me to design a 20' double ended 'pocket ship' for him and the Isle of Gigha is
the result.
In such a short length
she has room for 4 berths for day/weekend sailing plus a wc compartment and
small galley. For longer trips she would be an ideal 2 berth cruiser with plenty
of storage space.
Construction is ply over frame, clinker ply or stitch and tape - both
would be completed over a slotted ply framework of longitudinal girders and
bulkheads/frames. Construction starts with 3 sub assemblies - bow, stern and a
centre section which incorporates a ply box keel (later filled with scrap
ballast. As an alternative a simple keel of steel box filled with scrap lead can
be used. Planking is then started using whichever method you want over the
framework which at this stage is upside down on a building jig/strongback.
She has a shapely and attractive double ended hull with a narrow flat
bottom hull panel (making construction easier) and 4 further planks per side.
She uses 25 sheets of 9mm, 3 sheets of 12mm and 2 sheets of 25mm plywood in her construction. LOD
