|
We have 5 designs for
Motor Canoes.
Note -
In the particulars for each design, the dry weight is given for guidance
only and will vary depending on the grade/density of plywood and solid
wood used - different thicknesses of ply are often used by builders and
the dry weight figure is based on the thinnest ply specified.
Also the Guidance Use comments are given in good faith and are based on
feedback from previous builders etc and based on standard weight adults
- contact us if you want further clarification before ordering/building.

10' OUTBOARD
MOTOR CANOE
|
|
This
canoe is a shortened version of the original 12'6" Outboard motor canoe for
a client who wanted a more compact design which would be easier to
store. Stitch and tape construction is used to make her quick and easy
to build with a low construction cost. She is a small, tough knock-about
boat and exterior WBP (water and boil proof) ply can be used to keep
costs down.
Depending upon the type of ply used, weight will be around
50 - 55 lbs.
|
|
|
The
painted example (left) has been built by Howard Reynolds who inserted
two centre ply frames/bulkheads and cut through the hull panels between
them to give him a canoe that can be stored in two halves. The halves are
bolted together.
The
example below is being built by Brian Worrall.

12'6" OUTBOARD
MOTOR CANOE
|
|
|
|
This
canoe is an adaptation of our Waterman 16 Mk2 open canoe requested by a client
who wanted a lightweight craft which he could easily car top and which would
safely take a small outboard motor to use for fishing and camping. Her beam has
been widened to 44" giving more internal space and additional stability
when moving around in the boat. She uses the stitch and tape method of
construction. Depending upon the type of ply used, weight will be around 55 lbs. |

15' OUTBOARD
MOTOR CANOE
|
|
|
|
Right, an example by Tim Yates. |
|
Below is an example by Richard
Varley. |
|
|
This 15’ (4.58m) design is an
extended version of our 12’6” Outboard Motor Canoe and uses the same basic
hull shape with it’s narrow flat bottom panel with 3 further panels added each
side to form an attractive but stable and easily built shape. 3 seats plus a
forward stowage area are shown but she could be fitted out with a different
arrangement to suit individual needs.
Normally a 1/2—2 hp
engine would be used but she could take bigger units and she can be rowed or
paddled—and like her smaller sister, a sail rig could be used.

OUTBOARD MOTOR CANOE
|
|
I was asked to
take the 15’ (4.58m)
Outboard Motor Canoe design
extend
it to 18' and also add 2" (50mm) to the hull depth. This new design uses the same basic
hull shape with it’s narrow flat bottom panel with 3 further panels added each
side to form an attractive but stable and easily built shape. 3 seats plus a
forward stowage area are shown but she could be fitted out with a different
arrangement to suit individual needs.
Normally a 1—2
1/2 hp outboard is used but larger outboards can be used.

18' OUTBOARD MOTOR FREIGHT
CANOE
|
|
For those
wanting a much bigger outboard motor canoe capable of having several fishing at
once and which can also be used as a freight canoe on rivers and lakes, the 18'
Outboard Motor Freight Canoe would certainly suit. She can take 6-8 adults or 4
adukts with plenty of room for fishing or wildlife photography.
I took the 18
Outboard Canoe and widened and deepened it to give a beam of 4'6" (1.37m)
and a mid hull depth of just over 17" (0.44m). She can be built entirely of
1/4" (6mm) plywood but for a rough and tough freight canoe, we recommend
9mm for the bottom hull planks. Construction is simple stitch and tape.
Details are shown on
the plans to split the canoe into boltable halves.
A 4 or 5hp
outboard can be used but I would recommend 8 to 15hp with a maximum of 25hp.

12 - 16' STRIP
PLANKED MOTOR CANOE |
|
|
|
The
striking example above is by Patricio de Salterain in Uraguay. |
This is a strip
planked version of our plywood motor canoes—because she is strip
planked over computer generated moulds, the spacing between the moulds
can be altered to give any length between 12’ and 16’.
Apart from using an outboard motor between 1.5 and 4hp, she could be
fitted out for rowing and/or sailing (we can provide these details from
our other designs of similar size).

15' TRICAN
MOTOR CANOE |
|
The client who asked for
this design, Jim Ferguson (who has sadly now passed on), wanted a design
that could be used in
a number of ways - a true multi-role craft for use in Australian waters.
The main hull can be used by itself as a simple motor
canoe or as a Proa with just one float or as a trimaran with 2 floats.
With just the main hull she is a stable motor canoe for use in estuaries
etc but with the floats she will become a very stable platform for all
sorts of uses including coastal fishing and diving etc.
The plans show
construction both in sheet aluminium and stitch and tape plywood - the
beams are aluminium poles.

|
|
|
|
For
moving silently up remote quiet creeks and rivers to picnic amongst the Willows
and enjoy country side not seen by many, we have designed this attractive
electric canoe.
Construction uses the strip plank process using computer faired mould shapes and
she is powered by a Mini Kota type electric outboard.
She can take 3 or 4 adults. She could be fitted with a canopy or with steam
power.

23'6" BRAMBLING ELECTRIC
CANOE
|
|
A
leisurely craft from the Edwardian and Victorian eras - days of elegance on the
Thames with parasols and wine! we were commissioned to design such a canoe, to
be powered by a Gebofa electric 1.6 hp sail drive unit and constructed using
modern clinker ply methods. The plans give the computer faired sectional mould
shapes which are then erected onto a strong back. Stringers are then let into
the moulds and the plank shapes taken easily from the building jig using the
stringers as a guide. The hull could also be strip planked. Speed approx. 5.5 knots. Capacity for up to 6 people.
