FOR DOUBLE ENDERS
(PLYWOOD - STITCH & TAPE & STRIP PLANK
CONSTRUCTION)
|
We have 2 designs
for double enders on this page - but do
look at our canoe yawl designs on the Dayboats & Small Cats page and Hazel
in our Rowing Skiff page.
Note -
In the particulars for each design, the dry weight is given for guidance
only and will vary depending on the grade/density of plywood and solid
wood used - different thicknesses of ply are often used by builders and
the dry weight figure is based on the thinnest ply specified.
Also the Guidance Use comments are given in good faith and are based on
feedback from previous builders etc and based on standard weight adults
- contact us if you want further clarification before ordering/building.

15' KESTRAL
PEAPOD
|
|
|
Kestral is a beautiful 15’ Peapod type craft with four planks per side. The
drawings give the plank shapes for simple stitch and epoxy construction but she
could either be strip planked or built using the clinker ply method. She would
make a very efficient rowing boat without the sail and she can carry 3 or 4
adults easily. For sailing we have given her a very simple sprit rig which can
be mounted and demounted quickly. She uses 6 sheets of 5 or 6mm plywood and half
a sheet of 12mm ply (for the sailing version). LOD 14’11’’ (4.53m); Beam 4’9’’
(1.47m); Hull depth amidships 1’6’’ (.45m); Approx. wht 150 lbs (68kg).
Note - the plans now
have the stitch and tape plank shapes etc for a 5 plank per side
version.

hog and then the boat is planked with thin strips of Cedar glued edge to edge
with epoxy giving a traditional round bilge American Peapod which are renowned
for their rowing capabilities. She may be half decked giving dry stowage space
or left open for maximum carrying capacity. LOA 15’; Beam 4’3’’; Details
of the sailing rig are shown on the drawings.

12'3" PLOVER
DOUBLE ENDED SWAMPSCOTT/SURF DORY
|
|
This design is based on a double ended version of our 12' 4" Petite Brise
Swampscott dinghy - https://www.selway-fisher.com/Other1013.htm#PETITE
Swampscotts as a breed usually have a
narrow 'tombstone' transom making them more or less double ended (semi
Swampscott dorys have a wider transom) - when they end up with a true
'sharp' aft end, they become 'surf' dorys
She can be constructed in stitch and tape
or, using the building jog details given, in clinker/ply.
The Plover can be built as a pure rowing
boat or with the rig - details for a daggerboard are shown but there is
also room for a centreboard. She is a jaunty and attractive little boat
that can take 2 or 3 sailing and 3 or 4 rowing.

14'9" GREBE
PEAPOD
|
|
This design is a symmetrical Peapod - in other words the front and
back of the hull are exactly the same which is how most Peapods were
designed and built.
The length is the maximum that can
be obtained by butting 2 sheets of standard 8' plywood together and her
beam has been set for comfortable exercise rowing without the need for
outriggers.
She can be fitted out with a simple
ply or solid wood fixed centre thwart or she can be fitted with a
sliding seat (details of a basic sliding seat are given on the
drawings).
