COBLE DESIGNS & PLANS
UP TO 13' LENGTH

We have 3 designs
-
the intention is to produce a class of boat going from the first example which is 10' 6" long to a 12'6", 15' and eventually 18' examples. Each set of plans will be drawn up with details for both stitch and tape and clinker/ply construction and each will have a simple rig.

Note - In the particulars for each design, the dry weight is given for guidance only and will vary depending on the grade/density of plywood and solid wood used - different thicknesses of ply are often used by builders and the dry weight figure is based on the thinnest ply specified.
Also the Guidance Use comments are given in good faith and are based on feedback from previous builders etc and based on standard weight adults - contact us if you want further clarification before ordering/building. E & OE

NEW 9' 4" NORTHUMBRIAN COBLE

This is the smallest version of our highly successful Northumbrian Coble range of cruising dinghies. She can sail with 2 crew or row/motor with 3 and has plenty of reserve buoyancy in her lines—she has the same tumblehome, generous freeboard and deep forefoot with flared bow sections as her larger sisters. Construction is simple stitch and tape and uses just 4 sheets of 4, 5 or 6mm plywood. A very pretty little craft for use as a tender, sail trainer or for pic-nics.

LOA 9’4” (2.85m); Beam 4’2” (1.26m); Approx. wht 73 lbs (33kg).

NORTHUMBRIAN 10'6"
Northumbrian 10

The concept of the Northumbrian 10'6" came from the need to have a sturdy and very seaworthy small working dinghy which could be rowed, sailed and motored easily and which would weigh no more than 70 lbs or so. She also had to have a striking appearance and on looking around at some of our traditional working craft, l revisited drawings that l had done some while ago of Yorkshire Cobles These Cobles were used for fishing and foying (tending shipping) in the rugged conditions of the NE coast and North Sea. She retains the generous freeboard and high stem of the Yorkshire Cobles along with their shapely well raked transoms, tumblehome and striking reverse sheer line.

This 10'6" x 4'3" version will have a simple lug rig with a centreboard. The first boat went together in around 30 hours - from marking out the hull panels to epoxy coating and cost approximately £300 using a good quality 5 ply Marine Plywood, Douglas Fir and WEST epoxies.
The example left is by Anthony Waller.

Below is a beautiful example by Ted Boelema.

NORTHUMBRIAN 12'6"
Northumbrian 12 The 12'6" version uses a gunter rig and has a beam of 4'11". She uses 6mm (1/4") ply - around 5 sheets and has an approx. weight of 120 lbs. Her high forward freeboard and veed forward sections means that she will throw off water in rough seas. Like her smaller sister, she has tumblehome in her topsides from amidships aft making her easy to row whilst giving a generous waterline beam and stable sections.
