OUR CANOE
DESIGNS & PLANS
|
(last updated
03/08/23)
All our canoe designs are commissions from clients with specific requirements in mind - you
should be able to find one in our catalogue which closely meets your
requirements - but if not, our YachtCAD system is able to quickly make
modifications (change style, dimensions, number of planks etc, etc).
|
Most of our canoes are built
using the stitch and tape (tack and tape) method and some by the Cedar strip
plank method - see the navigation links at the top left hand of this page for more details and
examples of these methods of construction.

All our canoes
have been built by Scout groups, training courses, schools etc and we run a full
back-up service during construction.
Also note that Chippendale
Boats Ltd of N.Ireland produce finished canoes and kits for some of our canoe
designs.

CANOE MANUAL
|
|
Ply/Epoxy and stitch and tape construction is
fun because, with little financial outlay, you can be on the water very quickly
in a boat that you have created yourself over a period of only 25 hours or so,
using basic domestic facilities. Apart from detailing these construction
methods, the manual also includes chapters on Basic Tool Requirements, Jointing
Methods for Chines and Long Planks, Low Cost Materials and Paddle Design and
Construction. Also included is a chapter on CONVERTING YOUR OWN CANOE TO SAIL
with details of RUDDER and LEEBOARD requirements and HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN SIMPLE
SAILS.
This new version of the
manual now includes details of canoe 'bits and pieces' - canoe trolleys,
outboard brackets and wells, making a canoe in 2 halves, a sculling rig,
floats and sponsons and various different rudders.

NEW FOR SELWAY FISHER DESIGN – ELECTRONIC FILES FOR PLANS |
All
Full Construction Plans and Study Plans are now available as electronic
PDF files which can be sent to you as email attachments, for you to
download.
If
you want to receive PDF files rather than paper hard copies then mention
this in the ‘additional notes’ section of the ordering process and
make sure we have your email address – or send us a separate email (to
paul@selway-fisher.com) with
your requirements.
Most
reasonably sized towns have a Copy Shop or Print Shop with an inkjet
plan printer capable of taking PDF files and printing them out onto A1
or A0 paper. You can also print the files out at A4 size and zoom into
the plan files within Adobe Acrobat reader. The advantage is of course,
that you do not have to wait for the post - as soon as your order
payment has been made, we can email you the plan files.
